Carpet Cleaning

We all recognise that carpets are a major purchase these days and keeping them in tip top condition requires regular cleaning and maintenance – just like the other area of your home.

The fibres in carpets and rugs and any soft furnishings act as a “filter” trapping particulates (or soils) and contaminants (such as pollen, smoke and dust mites etc.) and without regular vacuuming or deep cleaning, in time these can build up releasing these contaminants back into the air, which can cause distressing symptoms of allergen sensitivity as well as unsightly soiling and premature wear and tear of the fibres. Regular cleaning of your carpets and soft furnishings will significantly reduce the amount of allergens in your home, and is key to a healthy environment for you and your family.

For the majority of carpets our preferred method of cleaning is hot water extraction. Shaw Industries, one of the world’s largest carpet manufacturers, recommend that carpets are professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months using the hot water extraction method (www.shawfloors.com). However, not all carpets can be wet cleaned (e.g. jute, sisal and sea grass) and so we also use a low moisture cleaning process. You can read about our cleaning methods here.

All of our cleaning processes and the products we use are generally safe for pets, babies, allergy suffers and safe for the environment and after careful consideration we will use only the most appropriate cleaning method and product for the given situation.

Upholstery Cleaning

Upholstery fabrics tend to be more delicate that carpets and rugs but they still act like a “filter” (to a lesser extent) for particulates and contaminants. However, unique to upholstery is the presence of hair grease on seat backs, grease and dirt from hand and arms on the arm rests, ground in soil on the seats from sitting down as well as heel and shoe marks on the skirts of sofas and chairs.

As carpet and upholstery cleaning professionals, RedKite we will evaluate your particular needs and advise you on the best cleaning solution to fulfil your needs. We will use only the most appropriate cleaning method dependent on the type and condition of the fabric; this may be hot water extraction, dry foam or dry powder.

Rug Cleaning

Rugs can vary considerably in terms of quality and cost and so the most appropriate method of cleaning must be chosen to ensure the best possible outcome. For this reason Persian and Oriental rugs are cleaned off-site using a special bespoke process which includes:

  • Pre wash inspection
  • Dusting
  • Cleaning
  • Centrifuge extraction system
  • Protector
  • Drying and finishing

Other types of rug e.g. silk, wool and synthetic may be cleaned onsite using similar cleaning methods as with carpets and upholstery. RedKite will evaluate your particular needs and advise you on the best cleaning solution to fulfil your needs. We will use only the most appropriate cleaning method dependent on the type of rug.

Protector

We realise this is a matter of choice for individuals, but as professional carpet and upholstery cleaners we would always recommend protecting your newly cleaned carpets, upholstery and rugs. Protection can act as a barrier against staining and re-soiling and helps to keep your soft furnishings cleaner for longer. The protector we use is PROmite which has been awarded the seal of approval from the British Allergy Foundation and is guaranteed to kill around 95% of house dust mites.

Leather Cleaning

We clean leather by hand using safe products developed by leading industry experts to ensure that your valuable soft furnishing is not only clean but conditioned.

Our FREE onsite survey will first identify the type of leather, level of soiling, any damage and repairs and the best cleaning method for the best results. We may also recommend Leather Protect as this helps to maintain a proper moisture level and act as a protective barrier to resist the effect of daily soiling.

  • We clean the leather using a specialist leather cleaning solution. This step will remove any ingrained soil and grease from the leather. This involves gentle agitation into the grain of the leather which helps to achieve desired results.
  • After this initial cleaning process we will remove any last traces of emulsified soil and grease from the leather to prepare its surface for the leather finishing process.
  • We then apply a leather protection and conditioning agent onto the leather. This product helps maintain a proper moisture balance and helps resist the effects of daily soiling. It also ensures a long lasting supple feel.

Cleaning Methods

Hot Water Extraction

We will move furnishings such as chairs and tables but for insurance reasons we expect you to remove small or valuable items such as ornaments / pictures.

Every one of our customers receives the same level of service from us and when we choose hot water extraction we clean using our multi stage process:

  • Step 1: Power vacuum. We will power vacuum using a high filtration cleaning system. This is designed to remove the loose dirt, dust and gravel that work its way into all carpets, upholstery or rugs.
  • Step 2: Treat pre-identified stains. We use a pre-spot solution on difficult stains using the most appropriate specialist treatment prior to pre-spaying the entire area.
  • Step 3: Pre-spray. We will apply an environmentally friendly pre-spray solution to emulsify (separate) and loosen the ground in soil and pollutants from the carpet, upholstery or fibres.
  • Step 4: Agitate. Depending on the level of soiling we will choose either a lightweight mechanical agitator or rotary scrubbing machine to “work” the pre-spray solution into the carpet. This step helps to “lift” the soil from the pile prior to moving on to the next stage of the process.
  • Step 5: How water extraction. Our triple vacuum pump and hot water extraction machine heats clean water to the desired temperature. Hot water is sprayed onto the carpet fibres, rinsing them. The high powered triple vacuum pump then extracts the residue leaving your carpets fresh, clean and healthy.
  • Step 6: Foil tabs. We place the legs of your furniture onto foil tabs and polystyrene blocks to avoid the possibility of colour transfer from your furnishings onto your carpet whilst the carpet is drying.
  • Step 7: Grooming. Where applicable we will use a grooming rake to lift the pile as this aids the drying process and leaves the carpet looking great.
  • Step 8: Drying process. To accelerate drying times we use air movers so that you can use your room at the earliest opportunity.

Dry Powder

Dry powder is sometimes used on carpets, upholstery or rugs that cannot be wet cleaned.

  • Step 1: Power vacuum. We will power vacuum using a high filtration cleaning system. This is designed to remove the loose dirt, dust and gravel that work its way into all carpets, upholstery or rugs.
  • Step 2: Dry powder. We will spread the dry powder granules onto the area to be cleaned.
  • Step 3: Agitate. Depending on the level of soiling we will choose either a lightweight mechanical agitator or rotary scrubbing machine or sometimes a brush to “work” the powder into the carpet or upholstery.
  • Step 4: Curing. The curing process is the time taken for the granules to absorb the particulates and contaminants.
  • Step 5: Power vacuum. We will power vacuum using a high filtration cleaning system. This is designed to remove the granules which have absorbed the particulates and contaminants, leaving the carpets, upholstery or rugs fresh, clean and healthy.

Dry Foam

Dry foam is low moisture cleaning system that is sometimes used on carpets and upholstery that cannot be over-wet and where the hot water extraction process or dry power method of cleaning is not suitable.

  • Step 1: Power vacuum. We will power vacuum using a high filtration cleaning system. This is designed to remove the loose dirt, dust and gravel that work its way into all carpets, upholstery or rugs.
  • Step 2: Dry foam. We apply the foam onto the area to be cleaned using the dry foam machine and gently agitate the surface using a rotary head and repeat this process until the carpet or upholstery is cleaned.
  • Step 3: Extraction. We extract the foam and soiling through the suction hose on the dry foam machine.

Encapsulation

This is a low moisture cleaning system. This is a process whereby crystallising polymer surrounds soil particles in the carpet and forms a crystal that can’t attract other soil.  The encapsulated soil particles can then be extracted with normal daily vacuuming. Since there is no dirt attracting residue left behind the carpet stays cleaner for longer.  The encapsulation system we use contains an in-built protector which helps protect the carpet from most but not all permanent staining (unfortunately this does not extend to hot beverages which may result in permanent staining unless treated immediately and professionally).
